459082897A bold, committed approach to curriculum development still needs thorough evaluation of the process to inform improvements as it goes along. The latest report from independent researchers does just that, and is a very accessible read.

It celebrates the approach being taken but suggests that schools outside the Pioneer network need more awareness of progress:

‘The Pioneer School model has succeeded in securing strong support for the vision set out in Successful Futures among those schools engaged in the process and among strategic partners. Ultimately, however, all schools in Wales have a part to play in delivering a successful Curriculum for Wales.’ Hence the recommendation for ‘more concerted action and engagement’ with schools outside the Pioneer network.

It also reflects the challenges in what will be a ‘complex and long-term change management process’, picking out ‘ensuring alignment between new curriculum arrangements and assessment frameworks, particularly beyond Key Stage 3’ as an example.

This valuable report is already informing planning for the year ahead.
